<span style="font-size:12px;">Independence Day (July 4th) commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress in 1776. This act severed political ties and established the United States as a sovereign nation. It signifies the nation's commitment to the ideals of liberty, self-governance, and the pursuit of happiness. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:11px;">June 11, 1776: Continential Congress appoints the Committee of Five to draft a declaration.<br />
July 2, 1776: Congress approves resolution for independence.<br />
July 4, 1776: Congress unamimously ratifies the Delcaration of Independence, signed by John Hancock.<br />
July-August 1776: Declaration signed by other 55 signatories.</span></p>
